If the Government Didn't Stop Tax Rebates back in the 80's & forward to date for Solar Installs on People's Houses, We would not be in Deep Trouble & paying $4.00 a gallon for gas & with Relying on oil as much today, We would of had 25 yrs + working ahead being busy to date of being self sustainable by now. Nobody brings this up, Today what to do, Schools are going to Geo - Thermal, that subject gets missed mostly on the news.

UNITED STATES - The west coast boundary between the North American and Pacific plates is "sliding" along the San Andreas fault (many earthquakes but few volcanoes) from the Gulf of California up to northern California and subducting from the Cascade volcanoes north through the Aleutians. There are also volcanic hot spots under Yellowstone and Hawaii and intra-plate extension with hot springs in the Great Basin. California generates the most geothermal electricity with about 824 MWe at the Geysers (much less than its capacity, but still the world's largest developed field and one of the most successful renewable energy projects in history), 490 MWe in the Imperial Valley, 260 MWe at Coso, and 59 MWe at smaller plants. An additional 242 MWe are planned for operation by 2000. There are also power plants in Nevada (196 MWe now, 205 MWe more planned), Utah (31 MWe), and Hawaii (25 MWe). 75 MWe are planned in other states. Due to environmental advantages and low capital and operating costs, direct use of geothermal energy has skyrocketed to 3858 GWh/yr, including 300,000 geothermal heat pumps. In the western United States, hundreds of buildings are heated individually and through district heating projects (Klamath Falls, Oregon; Boise, Idaho; San Bernardino, California; and soon Mammoth Lakes and Bridgeport, California). Large greenhouse and aquaculture facilities in Arizona, Idaho, New Mexico, and Utah use low-temperature geothermal waters, and onions and garlic are dried geothermally in Nevada.

If the USA would go Solar for summer, we would be unhooked somewhat on a percentage from the gas, coal & Fossil burning carbon adders. If we could control our lives better. we would all be Solar Farmers for a period of the year 6-10 months depending where we live, with a solar panel on our roof either being photo voltage or thermal , wind power for others, heat pumps for others and so on. below
is some of the links i found, between my Epa Ac license to work on
Heat pumps mixed with Heat Pump feature (Scroll type- variable speed

Geothermal instead of the unit only be thermally connected with outside air them only (Ambient Outside AIR Temp) not the best, bury a Abs loop in the ground on your property, or if you had a Swimming Pool , dump it there, does 2 jobs then, good, anyway Heat pumps dumping there thermal transfer to good old mother earth is Geo-thermal / Heat pump configuration is in my option the best for the cost out of the box. the best for the price, ( $1 of energy in - $3 out - the fact ) with a regular heat pump ,air , transfer units are only good till the outside air difference is max out at 40F, 30F is considered the max before your $1 in, turns out to be $1 out, a Engineered correctly designed ground loop systems can yield 4 - 5 times Coefficient - it means $1 in - $5 out , 24/ 365 days a year this is correct, you need to study to lean "Y", because earth is a temporal temp is a constant 50F + - 5F year round I passed 4 cert. last winter 2005, My average score is 97% - if you do water type heat pump can be less than 1/2 the size unit as a air unit. see here > Gaiam - Heat Pump Water Heaters If you use electricity to heat water, heat pumps are three to five times more ... The good points of heat pump water heaters are they use only 33% to 50% as much power. Someone agrees Swimming Pool Heat Pump Today an emerging method of heating pools is the heat pump pool heater. A heat pump's efficiency is dependent on the outside temperature and since pools are usually used during warm and mild weather, heat pumps are a very efficient method of heating pools. Heat pumps do not generate heat, they simply capture it and move it from one place to another. How efficient is a swimming pool heat pump? That's not an easy question to answer. Heat pumps don't have a simple efficiency number to work with. Their efficiency is measured by Coefficient of Performance (COP). Just like other heating options, heat pumps can have low efficiencies or high efficiencies. Their COP can range from 3.0-7.0. The higher the number the more efficient the heat pump. What this means is that for every unit of electricity that you put in to run the compressor, you get 3-7 units of heat out of the heat pump. The higher efficiency units usually use scroll compressors versus the reciprocal compressors of the standard units. Arizona Geothermal Direct Use Conference Why Geothermal? Heat, from the earth's interior, can be extracted from hot water or rock and used to heat buildings, greenhouses, water and more. Using geothermal heat in this manner is known as "direct use." Heating with renewable geothermal energy can drastically reduce or eliminate natural gas, propane or electricity use. Arizona possesses a substantial geothermal resource that can be developed for direct use applications, which will stabilize energy bills, reduce energy costs, and increase energy independence. This one-day conference will provide comprehensive information on the state's geothermal resource, potential for development, project examples and steps to getting projects in the ground.

Closed loop System Presently installed in Stroudsburg in Early 2006 - Solar water returned from roof regularly @ 120 F Daily in April (System Cost : Parts about $1800 + 2 day installation) , A great Survey Site since the 40 apt, is medium numbers, Funded By owner of Complex & My Time at Regular Rate. 40 apartment housing unit . Return Investment will be less than 1 year , only moving service parts is the pump, should last for 30+ yrs
in April @ 125 F. @ 40,670 Btu's) output & May 29 @ 140F output to a supply's H. W. preheat Holding Tanks - to the Input of the Electric Hot water Heaters
Update ---- May 30 - On time was 8 am, off was solar day peak time of 4 pm, ...... we stored up 520 gallons at 120 F in 8 hours.
Btu Math = 70 gallons on Roof = 581 Lbs X 70 F (present) Increase using 125F = 40,670 BTU's) coming down - Free Sun ( Collector liquid capacity should be min 10 % to 15% or 20% for good performance of storage capacity ) Metered flow output = 2 GPM Flow rate = water in sun area = 35 minutes , 4 hours per day to cycle full 520 gallons = 2 cycles per 8 hr. day |
||||||||||||
If you use what size Piping ? 1/2" pipe = 40 ' per gal / 500'= 12.5 gal / or 1000' = 25 gal / 1200 = 30gal $100 (15 min in sun) / 1500' = 37 gal. 1'' pipe = (20 ft per gal) (100 ft = 5 gal) 2.5 min (300 ft =15 gal) 8 min in sun (1000' = 50gal ) (1500' = 75 gal ) time = 37 min in sun - (all times) based on 2 gal per minute flow |
||||||||||||
We only have (2) 80 gallon out of (5) water heaters presently ON requiring Electric power from the power Company to heat the water for the Entire 40 unit Apt. Complex. Thanks to the all day Solar sun water coming down from the roof, soon we will be on only (1) 80 Gallon unit for all of the 40 Apartments, Update - 1 unit is not enough on cloudy days , 2 does just fine Survey of 2006, I will install this year the multi pump mirco-controller board, I designed , will update you, when I do another survey 2007
Final Storage BTU's Before Electric Power Usage Will be 520 gallons X 8.3 LBS = 4,316 Lbs X increase temp from 55 well temp to about 130 degrees = 75 degrees increase or 323,700 Btu's from the sun before Electric Power is applied. to ( 520 gallon of Night time 130 F degree Stored Solar Hot Water + Day time hot water usage included by system (24-7 ) System does +30 degrees increase on 65 degree cloudy days & about 75 degrees increase on 90 degree days / Remember were dealing with the full light spectrum ( Ir to Uv wave length ) not just Visible light @ 400-700 nanometers
Solar Power - There are many ways to take advantage of the heat and light generated by the sun. During the energy crisis of the 1970s, a solar energy future was the rallying cry for many environmental activists concerned about America's addiction to fossil fuels. Consumers continue to prefer to rely upon sunlight for electricity over any other supply option. read more

My Research for over a yr. say that 3 gallons per min is a
good flow for solar, you must consider piping size resistance
> the length of the loop to get your figure, not just head
height when choosing a pump, a good idea after choosing your
parts and building your system is to install a flow
meter on the return to the roof, since that's the cooler side,
to check the exact flow, flow alone is not the most important
factor when tuning your system, Flow x Temp to the heat
exchange give the thermal transfer, and is the same for the
collector time to pick up the heat again. that's why you
should be able to change the flow in a Range during the day to
get 140F coming down at the slowest flow rate at the same
time, and to get 140F + down if you can at the max flow rate, the
perfect system. (1 Lb of water x 1 degree = 1 Btu)
...slow flow when the sun comes up/max flow in mid day/slow
flow heading to the evening.
Were in model T times, As most installers slap a system up and get some heat out and there down the road to the next job . its like a car without a gas peddle, crude ! No fine or medium way of changing the differences the sun hits the roof from morning to peak to dusk ! Thermal Exchange is what the solar market does, it has allot of differences during the day.
you could install a tempering valve that would not be as good because it would add resistance to the pump when not fully open and that would cost more energy to the pump and make the pump run hotter. the controller is the best design again, but this would be a simple add on, but you will still need a temp watch dog comparator to see the temp on the roof and the storage tank and know when to come on and shut off the system. a cheap timer to set on at 9 am and off at 6pm and the tempering valve would be a start of a running system.
